What these products actually offer
Rather than researching and selecting individual stocks entirely on your own, a smallcase or similar thematic basket gives a pre-built, ready-made portfolio around a specific idea, sector or strategy, which you buy as a single defined bundle directly in your own demat account, unlike a mutual fund which pools money into a fund structure held in the fund's own name.
