6.2.1 Goal-Based Planning Steps
A structured goal-based planning process moves through seven clear steps: list goals, assign priority, calculate the required corpus, decide asset allocation per goal, choose products, automate contributions, and review annually.
The seven steps in sequence
First, list every goal along with its realistic time horizon and estimated amount. Second, assign a relative priority to each, since resources are rarely sufficient to fully fund every single goal at the pace originally hoped for. Third, calculate the actual required corpus for each goal, explicitly adjusted for expected inflation between now and the goal's target date.
Fourth, decide an asset allocation appropriate to each specific goal's own time horizon, rather than applying one single blanket allocation across every goal. Fifth, choose the specific products, funds, deposits or other instruments, that fit each goal's chosen allocation. Sixth, automate the actual contributions wherever practically possible, since automation is what makes a plan far more likely to actually be followed through consistently over time. Seventh, review the entire plan at least once a year and adjust as genuinely needed.
Why the structure itself matters, not just the individual steps
Following this structured sequence, rather than investing without a clearly defined plan and simply hoping things broadly work out, converts a vague, general intention to invest into a series of specific, trackable, genuinely actionable decisions, each with an explicit purpose behind it.
Where this naturally leads
Once a goal-based structure like this is in place, tracking actual progress against each individual goal becomes the ongoing, practical discipline that keeps the entire plan meaningfully on track over the following years, rather than the plan simply being set once and then forgotten.
How PriLytics helps. PriLytics is built directly around this exact structure, letting you tag funds to specific goals and track real progress against each one. See goals with guidance.
