6.2.5 Privacy in Portfolio Tracking

The trade-off most tools quietly ask you to accept

Convenient, automatic tracking across scattered accounts often comes bundled with uploading sensitive financial statements to a third-party server, or granting some form of ongoing account access, in exchange for that convenience. This trade-off is rarely made fully explicit or obvious to the user in the moment, even though it represents a real, ongoing and continuing data-security exposure for as long as that data remains stored somewhere outside your own direct control.

Why this risk is genuinely different in kind from typical investment risk

Market risk, credit risk and most other risks already discussed throughout this series are reasonably well understood, broadly quantifiable, and can be actively managed through sound portfolio construction. Data risk from a breach, at a provider you may have limited practical visibility into or control over, is a fundamentally different kind of risk that has comparatively little to do with the actual quality of your specific investment decisions themselves.
